November Update

It’s getting quiet in the garden now and the garden has been cleared of it’s old tomato plants and other debris. Surprisingly we still have a few peppers ripening while the weather is still mild. We’ve got a bed of garlic and some winter salad on the go and for some spring colour some bulbs have been planted.

Not much to do now until we start to prepare for planting in the spring. It’s been an amazing first full year in the garden!

September Update

The last couple of months have been fantastic! In August we won the Harvest Grow It! competition and recieved a certificate at a ceremony at Brighton Metrepole Hotel for the winners of Brighton in Bloom. Much tea and cake was consumed! We also won the Communal Garden category for Hyde Housing’s Garden competition and recieved £50 of gardening vouchers which were quickly spent on some greenery and colour for the winter.

Amongst all the excitement we had a great harvest of brocolli, cauliflower, beans, carrots, beetroot, cabbage, tomatos, pepper, spring onion and radish. All eaten with relish!

June Update

Rain at last! The garden’s getting the much-needed rain after a prolonged dry spell. As you can see from the photos everything is growing really well at the moment.  We have already started harvested three types of lettuce, rocket, mustard leaves, and curly kale.  We are looking forward to tomatoes and courgettes in a couple of weeks

April and May update

More planters were built in April, soil put in them, 140 plant plugs arrived from Rocket Gardens, and were planted out.

A new, smaller flat-pack shed was put up and the old one donated to a resident.  See  our June update for photos.

We are planning to put up the recycled seafront bench, and are also working on plans for using recycled plastic drums for water butts.  We are hoping to re-channel water from the Phoenix Centre roof to fill the water butts.

Latest Ideas

Blooming Shoes!

If you have any old shoes, slippers, boots or trainers don’t throw them away! you could help us with our latest idea! At the Phoenix Garden we have wooden pallets screwed to the wall just waiting for footwear to be nailed to them and filled with soil and flowers. Please see the links below to see what can be achieved.

March Update

New Planters now built

Thanks to the kind donation of 30 scaffolding boards from Hyde Build we now have our large planter ready. Malcolm built the structure and although we are too late to plant trees this year we will still be planting vegetables in them.

The new planters meant a rearrange of the garden and it’s now starting to take shape. Our seeds have started to germinate and this week we hope to plant them out. Meanwhile the spring flowers are out in force and looking bright and cheerful.

February update

Revised garden layout

We have  a revised plan with new planters to be made for apple and pear trees. We needed to re-design the planters, as we need deep ones for adequate root growth of the fruit trees.  It was not possible to take up flagstones in order to plant directly into the ground.

Seeds have been planted in the greenhouse in seed trays, including marigold, peppers, cabbage, beans, comomile.
